AutoCAD Drafter IV.
Revit Electrical BIM Detailer.
3d Artist.
Based in Southern California.
Hello. I am Luke “Lucky” Connolly. I am a Southern California based artist. I explore many different types of computer arts. From CGI to Web development. My main areas of interest are 3d Design and AutoCAD Drafting. I am an Autodesk AutoCAD and Revit Electrical Certified Professional and use both to complete various styles of drawings for field use. I’ve worked on a variety of aspects included in the electrical portion of construction. In the recent years I have taken up 3d printing and that has become a big part of my day to day duties. I am able to print with FDM and MSLA 3d printers. As for my studies in my off time I am currently studying 3d characters with Maya, Zbrush, Substance Painter, and Arnold Render. It is coming along nicely, between Gnomon Workshop and YouTube, I am able to find great resources for training and learning.
I began working for Morongo Casino Resort and Spa at the start of 2007. This was a great place to work and learning experience for me. Up to that point in my life this was the best job I had worked. Here I learned great customer service skills, organization, and multi-tasking. I enjoyed interacting with the poker players at the table while dealing, they always had an interesting story to tell. I performed three different job titles here, all within the same week sometimes. I started as a chip runner and desk clerk. The duties included selling poker chips to the players and dealers, cashing them out when they were done playing, and seating the players to their assigned seats for the games. As a dealer I would deal and run poker games including Texas hold'em and 5-Card Omaha or Big-O as it's referred to. All tasks here required a lot of interaction with the players. I learned a lot about people and interaction at my time there.
Southern California West Coast Electric is my former place of employment. This is an electrical company based in Southern California. It is a company on the rise and I enjoyed working here. I learned a great deal of knowledge here and put in a lot of work. I started there with no knowledge of AutoCAD or Revit, they gave me a chance to learn. Now I am an Autodesk AutoCAD Certified Professional with 8 years of experience. At SCWCE I perform the day to day drafting duties in AutoCAD. I complete, from sketch, shop drawings, full sets of drawings for construction, 3d modeling for fabrication, and BIM models for coordination. For the drafting, design, and 3d design I use AutoCAD 2018, Inventor, and Revit.
This is an online learning platform. This is where I began to advance my basic knowledge of 3d. I started with Digital-Tutors dvd training kits, they then went to membership access to all the training they offered. This was huge for me at that time, I completed a lot of training with new platform, a large portion of the foundation of my learning was completed here. Digital-Tutors was purchased by Pluralsite some time back, I have since switched my training resources. But I am very thankful for all I learned from this resource.
This was an online 12-week training course. We completed 3 projects, spending 4 weeks on each. The 3 projects we completed focused on character animation, motion graphics, and product design by modeling and rendering a vehicle. I enjoyed the time I spent with this course. Learning motion graphics was a big break through for me, it taught me to not be afraid to use the tools freely and do what I felt like with them. At that point I was very by the book thinking there was a certain way to perform each task, but learned there are endless possibilities.
This was a 10-week online course with Gnomon. It was a course taught by a Disney artist and it was on character design. I learned a lot about edge flow for characters and the design process that goes into modeling and sculpting a character.
Gnomon Workshop is an online based training resource. With this I have access to all the courses they offer for online platform. These courses interested me because they were pretty advanced. I am currently studying character design and texturing with Gnomon Workshops.
I am an Autodesk AutoCAD Certified Professional. AutoCAD is an enjoyable software to use. I have completed many drawings of different types in my time drafting. Site plans, floor plans, power plans, lighting plans, and so on. Smart blocks have really been growing on me, they're fun to make and speed up the design process when created and used properly.
Arnold Render is the rendering engine that comes standard in Maya now. I really enjoy using Arnold. Before it was Mental Ray or V-Ray for me. Arnold's PBR based shading combined with Substance Painter's output makes it a lot easier to get production renders with a lot of the work done automatically. I am still learning a lot about Arnold with each new project and will continue to learn as I complete more projects.
MSLA 3d printing is a new technology and I was able to pick up on the methods for this style of 3d printing. MSLA is a process that uses resin and UV light to create and cure the 3d print into it's smooth final print.
Maya is what I enjoy using the most. It is the first major software title I jumped into and started learning. Modeling in Maya is where my strength is in 3d. I have completed countless hours of tutorials on methods and different approaches to modeling. I was taught to always model with clean topology and four sided faces. This is what interests me with 3d modeling in Maya. It becomes an enjoyable challenge to create the models with these requirements. Digital Tutors is where I learned the majority of my modeling skills. They have a 4-course series on production modeling that gets more advanced with each course. I have completed and understand all 4.
I picked up on FDM 3d printing in the winter of 2018. I was challenged to design a functional mini-Nintendo 64. When I discovered buying a printer was cheaper than outsourcing, I went with the option of purchasing and building my own. I now have an Anet A8 modified to an AM8 and have also upgraded to an Ender 5 Plus. Taking up 3d printing was the best thing I could have done. I grew as a person, designer, and artist in the process of learning 3d printing. I spent about 8 months on the mini Nintendo 64; test prints, model revisions, and more test prints. But after all the trial and error it was completed. It runs on a Raspberry Pi 3 motherboard and has all the classics loaded on it. Picture in portfolio section.
Photoshop is a software I use a lot but still, I feel my knowledge of it could be better. I use Photoshop for touching up textures for 3d and basic compositing. Colorizing black and white photos in Photoshop is what I enjoy most with this software. Turning a historical photo into a color photo is rewarding and therapeutic at the same time. I find a lot of peace when colorizing. I do these when I am on down time or taking a break from a project.
